Batman and Red Robin

Batman and Red Robin 19 came out and I rather liked it. I liked how the story moved and went along. 

Bruce went, mind the pun, bat-shit crazy this chapter, and poor Tim got the short end of the stick from the whole deal.

Think about it. Bruce’s last button’s were pushed, (Finding out Damian had a secret college age friend and all and her asking where Damian was, kinda made him lose it more.) He still talks about Damian as if he’s still alive. (Which is heartbreaking)

With being pushed over the edge, Bruce looks for away to bring back his son. (I am going to go out on a limb here…(Yeah, bad pick in words) ) What if Bruce had no other choice in the matter but to search out Frankenstein, because Bruce has no idea where the Lazarus Pits are. For all Bruce knows, the pits died with Ra’s. (Who was missing last I checked)

Alfred, whom I know is worried about Bruce, calls in Red Robin to help. Dick isn’t around because “NOW” he decides to be a little bitch (I don’t blame him) and leave for Chicago. (Face palm. I am sure Chicago is nice and all, but really? I knew he’s after Tony Zucco…but still…I have issues with that…its just WHY Chicago of all places…)

Since Dick is out of town, Jason is “god, who knows where”. , Barbara is having her own family issues to deal out, all that is really left “in” the Family, is Tim.

With Tim and Alfred’s talk, Tim let’s Alfred know he’s still upset about the issues of Bruce not trusting anyone or telling the truth. He even questions if Bruce even needs anyone any more… This causes Alfred to snap back at Tim that he was getting angry. (God, someone give this poor kid a break, even Alfred snapped at him) Tim still has something wrong with him, (Whatever the Joker did, it isn’t good and I have a feeling Tim hasn’t told anyone yet. Either because he’s afraid or he just can’t because he’s being controlled)

Tim Finds Batman, who’s well aware of the boy. Bruce tells Tim to go back to the Titian’s, because Tim was just wasting Bruce’s time. Tim, but this time, I am sure is horrified about how far Bruce is willing to go. The two talk some more, this time about Trust issues within the Family and how Bruce is doing “it” again. In hopes to knock some sense into Batman, he tell’s Bruce what he hates to hear. Damian isn’t coming back, he dead.

Bruce says “he died”, Superman “died”. Monster man died, by somehow they call came back, so why not Robin?

The two get into a fight. (I found this so painful). Red Robin has Batman in a headlock. Telling Bruce that no matter what he does, Damian is never coming back. Bruce goes nuts, he “krak“‘s Tim’s jaw, kicks him to the wall and Baterangs Tim to the wall. As if putting Tim in his place. Seeing that Bruce is to far gone at this point, Tim forces Bruce’s hand again. Seeing that Bruce won’t listen, Tim says he’s sorry for what he’s about to do.

Tim blows up the research lab. Batman shields Frankenstein from the explosion. With all of his research up in smoke. Tim tries to talk to Bruce again, only to be cut off with a look from Batman I am sure Tim wasn’t expecting. (That look was just…ouch…) Batman leaves Tim, leaving the boy to put Frankenstein back together.

The interaction between the two was sad (and with what interaction they did have in the new 52 was Bruce telling Tim to shut up or ignoring him all together). It wasn’t really fair for Tim to do what he did, all alone.

At the end of the day, I wonder how bad Bruce had hit Tim, because it looked painful. I also wonder how much farther Tim will branch away from the rest of the family, before he himself is lost within that growing darkness no one else seems to be effecting the boy. …Either way, it was a good story, but a sad one at that….

Nrama: I once teased Pete Tomasi about making you draw a dog, because most artists don’t like having to draw animals. But I think Titus has become a beloved part of the comic. Will you guys keep him, do you think? And what’s drawing him been like for you, especially as you drew him in issue #18?

Gleason: Really? Artists don’t like drawing animals? I love drawing Titus. A dog was one of the things I asked Pete for when we were starting the book. I used to have a dog and someday I’d like to get another one, but for now Titus is like my own imaginary pooch. I found it surprising, once I started drawing him, that you can get so much emotion out of an animal onto the page. Some of my absolute favorite pages of my career are of Damian and Titus just hanging out together. He’s a real character and part of Bruce’s life so readers don’t worry! Titus wont be going anywhere soon. Now with Damian gone people can look for him to take on a new role in upcoming issues. I can’t say much more, but it is important.

Damian Wayne wasn’t having a good day, well a good night to say the least. It started with a simple mugging. Some “hot” shot stealing a woman’s fake Louis Vuitton bag. It all seemed normal at first. Capture the bad guy, return the goods and drop the guy off the roof a few times before tossing him to the police. Like normal for uneventful nights. But this criminal had done something different, something that was so sneeringly disgusting, it made Damian react. The bastard had sneezed in “his” face. Now Damian knew why Drake was such a germaphobe.
